in sand traps in tola & bunchgrass in after-
oon. Another seen on sandy ground in open stand tola.
April 26, 1951. First 20 traps held large Phyllostis. The 16 in
sand held 1 Akodon (berlepschii?). The 25 traps held 3 Akodon
jelskii, 1 A. berlepschii, 3 A. darwini (?)(young?), and 2 A. bolivi-
ensis. Discarded 15 gm. A. berlepschii, imm. 29 gm. A. jelskii,
adult ♀ 38 gm. A. jelskii, 3 imm. ♀ A. darwini (a order),
and 1 A. bolivianensis. Mary K. put up 1 A. jelskii, 1 A.
bolivianensis, and 1 Phyllostis darwini of my catch. Spent up
2 A. berlepschii & Durocyn. Picked up all traps. At 1:30
p.m. the 35 traps near camp held 3 A. berlepschii and
one bird (rufous urn-like ground & rock bird). Traps
by river held nothing. Saw one viscacha atop cliff
overlooking river - only one I have seen at this camp al-
though many viscachas - like droppings atop rocks. We
deported about 4:30 p.m. Thunder, lightning, & light
snow in afternoon. Rain below Santa Rosa. Camped at
stream about 6 miles from Mayorguz-Tarata road.
Local man said Pasto Grande about 30 km., Paracachera 50km,
and Volcan Tutupaca 100 km. up the road, & no other road.
He said rheas (llander) sometime seen at Pasto Grande, &
that road better beyond point of camp (probably could ride
with trailer). He described a grimo well & said there were some
