and drove 13 miles up the road to a pampas where we had

frost. Took a walk on pampas. Saw burrowing owls 7:10 a.m.
Burro pig out of hole at 7:15. Heard humblings of tucos
underground at 7:30. At 7:50 saw 10 tucos out of holes.
Also An Indian woman told me that Quillacota was farther
on - this place called San Antonio de ? . Found grass nest with
2 blue eggs, finely lotted, especially near large end. Nest in
center of isolated clump grass. Sparrow-sized gray bird,
darker on back, light superciliary line, was the occupant.
I found similar nest with 2 eggs on trap line 3 mi. E. of
houses at Hells P. on April 21 (attached to rock, 1½' above
ground, at edge thick bunch grass). One egg hatched during day
but Indians near nest kept adult off & young died. Shot a
white billed plumer-like bird with quail-like bill. It ran on
ground a great deal. Bocke tinnaman color & design. flew-plum-
like. On ground appeared dove-like. Shot Cerpalorus-sized
finch near the nest. We departed 10:20 a.m. and drove on to
Magaruy (12 miles). Maps at control station showed Pesto
grande (while said to be sheep) on Santa Rosa road beyond S.R.
Yesterday met Mr. Stening & 2 other adventurers on road. They
had been 114 km. off road into the sierra (three S.R.'s)
evidently Caccachara). Said (Duffy?) they saw 147 vicunas
