April 17, 1951
Hacienda Pairumani, nr. Ilave, 13000ft., Ooto Pong, Per-
Noil still on ground at points in trap line. Took up all traps except
2 steel nets. Fog this morning until 7:30 & grass very wet. 16 traps
at camp held no mice. 30 snares held 1 Phyllotis pictus, 1 P. deruini?
2 A. bolivianus (disarmed). Other 8 traps (ridge of cliff) ½ mile up
road) held nothing. Skinned P. pictura #7477 & 2 C. spretus ♂♀. No rain
today.
April 18, 1951. Clear, sunny, & light frost in morning. Left Heda. P.
about 8:30 a.m. Felis #7980 in steel net 2½ mile up road.
Drove to near Quillocto where there was a pampas of 100 sq.
miles or more with many llamas & alpacas grazing. Heard
two-two lambdings & saw mountain lobo. Set Morales
& Schuyler traps in & near their holes. Many shot a or two
and I shot 2♀ and 1♂. Traps caught none in 3 hrs.
Then drove on pampas for ½ hour ans shot 7 Cavia
from car with .22. Saw the big flevers (white belly,
large white wing patch) on pampas - a pair with 2
half-grown young. The black-tailed small doves fairly
common in groups up to 7. Saw 1 humming bird on pampas;
it bobbed while standing on grass after leaving hole, a vicin-
ity of, in banks. Returned to Heda. Pairumani and prepared
specimens. Overcast in afternoon but no rain.
April 19, 1951. A few thin cumulus clouds in morning. Skinned
the Felis. Set 52 traps (5 Schuyler, rest snap) in rocky canyon
½ mile west of Heda. buildings, on slope 20 to 400' above
canyon bottom, among rocks mixed with bunch grass and
various bushes. Shot a greison while setting traps. No rain
today though moderate overcast in afternoon. Moon nearly full.
