C. Koford 47 Journal April 12, 1951. Hda. Pairumani, nr. I/Iave, Depto. Puno, Peru Snaptraps held 3 Akodon (1 discarded), adult + 2 young. Walked up a rocky canyon to W. of buildings & shot a small dove thus. Saw no mammals nor signs. Whitewashed paint on cliffs where hawks? had perched. Saw one swimmim - like hawk (yesterday saw 2 marsh hawks at next locale to north). Many finjellito among rocks. But stichia capensis on rock walls near houses. Sunny morning, nearly clear, & warm in sunshine. Heavy frost last night. Certainly nights very damp. Many clear rindlets running through pastures toward river (wet meadows). Llamas + sheep & a few cattle in pasture here. Put up Akodon & bird traps occasional sparrow hawk. About 11 a.m. we left in jeep & drove 13 miles up road toward Mazorrey. Road good & slight climb, stopped on broad plain with very short grass where hundreds of llamas were grazing. There shot 3 Coqui & saw many more. I also shot a flicker & a sandpiper. About 5 miles up from Pairumani passed that area of great outcroppings of turgolante- like rock forming tall pillars with vertical sides. Several dark caves in rocks about 20 miles up from Pairumani came into area of low brush with cedar-like leaves. Returned to Hda. P. Set 6 Schuyler traps & 30 snap traps, 1 steel set in rocky canyon ½ mile W SW of round house. Two pairs of hawks came in to roost in even- ing - one pair black + white like my no. 943; other gray above, white below, with black wing tips. Dark at 6 p.m. but not cold. April 13/1951 The 16 snaptraps near camps held 1 Phyletius pictus. The 30 snap traps in rocky canyon held 2 P. pictus, 4 P. dominic or orileae (2 discarded), 4 Akodon yelshkii (1 discarded), 1 A. Oralivinus (3 discarded) - 15 out of 30 traps. Sport day pre- Raising specimens. Checked traps at 5 p.m. The string of 30
