C. Koford Journal April 11, 1951 Heda. Pairumani, nr. Ilaue, Dept. Puno, Peru. river clear and about 75 yds. wide near Ilave. Road toward Tarma road: 25 mile from fola came to houses in rolling green country. Inquired & found Heda. Parimani, where Pearson had stayed in 1946, was not one. Several of the wild- like birds on ground near buildings. Road from Ilave passed through rather flat grassy plain - guinea, barley, rejs, shrews, alpacas, llamas - sparsely populated. Hillside divided into irregular plots by stone walls but no fences in flat country. About 30 mile from fola reached turnoff to Heda. Parimani. Had to ford the stream, 150' wide, to reach houses. A several adobe buildings in cluster near foot of hills in grassy region with occasional rock outcropping. Eduardo de Arant not present. The wayfarer was Jorge B de Arant. He remembered Pearson, showed us the truck O.P. had sold them. Very hospitable. Spoke no English. Gave us rolls & fresh cheese for lunch. Showed us where Pearson had camped. Told us to ask for anything we might need. Said this were tinamous, zorros, gorionse, buracos, venado, here. Said he saw 6 buracos at once in a field across the road not long ago - they were large & long, he said. Cuyos (Cuna?) were in field near house, he said. Deer sometimes in bunches of 20 or 30. Elevation here 3975 meters, said Arant. Lightning + hail- storm in afternoon. Camped 1/4 mile W. of ranchhouse in grassy field near stone walls. About 5 p.m. went down to river & caught 7 troat, 8 to 11", 2 rainbows + 5 golden brown, in 30 minutes - very fine fishing. Set 16 snare traps & 6 live traps in grass & near rocks in pasture where we were camped. At 7 p.m. no catch - grazing in field may work against small mammals. Saw one Akodon running in grass about 3 p.m. Wind died shortly after sunset. About 8 p.m. spent 1/2 hr. looking for mammal with light; found none.
