April 10, 1951 Puno, Peru
Streets mainly cobblestone. Two gas stations with pumps.
Native women selling chuño & various kinds of potatoes, corn,
grapes, etc. in squares. Even oranges seen in store. Stores as
well stocked (with food) as in Arequipa. Roofs either red or
galvanized corrugated sheet metal. Town on a protected bay with
narrow channel leading out into lake. Altimeter registered 12,200
[Lake 12506 on AAA maps]. Visited postoffice - nothing there for us.
Looked up Mrs. Stening, 7th day adventist mentioned by Mrs. Neller.
Pleasant English speaking lady. She put thru phone calls to Arequipa
to inquire about my box of ammo (not there) and mail. Sent wire
to Barnett at Callao asking about ammo & requesting send here. Two
latter spent papers on way out of town toward Ilave, waiting about
one hour. Camped about 8 mile toward Ilave from Puno. Many
mud & stone huts, grass-thatched, placed up on rugged rock
hills, kind of cliff-dweller like. Saw 2 of the cassowaras (like
943) walking near shore. Partly overcast all day. Lightning to
east in evening. Warmest since leaving Arequipa - quite a few miles
fue. The little doves with short black tails common here as
all the way from Arequipa. Saw 2 bright green Jaycote on edge road
during day in damp area. Many found hundreds of small toads
near camp this morning & we saw many more or road approaching
Puno. Flickers (?) common; size & action of flicker with near-white
patch a rump + back; flicker flight & stance on ground. In open
greasy swar + on stone walls.
April 11, 1951. Drove on to Ilave. Road good but road, slightly
[illegible]
sur. 10 ± glossy skims at edge lake.
cordway. Just beyond Ilave comes to fork to Torna (328), Desaguadero,

living straight ahead (96). We took road toward Torna. Ilave
