Nr. Vilque, Dpto. Puno, Peru
To fork with choice of Juliaca (36 km.) and Puno. At km. 96 road passed close to a lake 1/8 mile long. Two black & white geese with one fee downy chick swan at edge. At a larger lake saw 3 pairs of the geese, one pair with 4 downy young swimming. Also 100+ coots in this lake and 20+ Franklin (?) gulls with black heads. Willet-like shore linder with large white wing patch were present (later seen near Vilque). Km. 91, lake about 1 mile across; more coots (red legs, orange-yellow frontal shield, larger than american coot). Km. 87, shot a hurrawing owl with .22. (.07945). Acted like familiar hurrawing owl, including bobbing. Stood on flat ground. Km. 81, lake 1 mile long; 30+ coots, 15+ gulls. At about km. 56 shot a large tinamou and saw 4 others (altimeter read 13400). Soon passed through mud town of Vilque & delayed by control station there. This area much cultivated and terraced on some slopes. Stopped in pasture at km. 42 for the night. Warmer here than at previous camps (altimeter 12500).
April 10, 1951 Warmer last night; some frost but no ice on windows - perhaps above 0°C. Talked with local man who said there were 3 kinds of owls here; burko (big), cuisico (burrowing), & another - "familia lechuza." He also said there was a large & small kind of perdiz (tinamou), & that a man nearby had 3 chicks of the small kind. We departed 11:30a.m. (speedometer 64582, at km. 42) and drove to Puno. Passed mud town with striking church at km. 34 and smaller town at km. 25. Many llamas, sheep, & cattle, but apparently no alpacas in this low country. The lake came in sight at about km. 7. Puno at edge of lake.
