April 8, 1951 W. of Puno, Peru
was inconspicuous & occurred at about km. 144 from Arequipa (altitude about 15000')
(about equidistant from Puno). A little down the Puno side
(km. 146 to Arequipa, 146 to Puno), saw 2 large mallard-like ducks
in pard by road. Shot one with .22. Then at km. 151 (to
942
Arequipa) saw a black caracara? with some white below and
943
tail (red face) walking on road. Shot this with .22 also. The
road was bad in spots - ruins, high centers, holes - but no impassable
places & fairly good between bad spots. Not muddy. A few flakes
of light snow fell in afternoon & sunset with cumulo-nimbus
cLOUDS. Rolling green meadows + clear streams from about
km. 133 on - reminded me of parts of the Rocky Mtns. in
Wyoming. We camped by road near km. 129 (to Puno), on
altit. 13,400'
short green thick grass near a clear stream. Many shotbucks
(about 2' tall maximum) with cedar-like leaves. Set about 10 snap
traps baited with rolled oats. Ground well trampled & groved so expected nothing.
Visited traps at 8 p.m. & found a mouse (Alcodon?) in trap set next to hole in
shot
ground under bush in flat grassy area 20' from stream. Cold clear night
April 9, 1951. Tail of mouse in some trap Alcodm caught; no other traps
spring. Put up more + hawkie. Clear day. Minimum -8°C. last night.
Departed mom (opdermit4527; km. 125 to Puno). Saw passed village,
(km. 123 from Puno)
Tinocolea & Lebeza. Rive 15' wide & clear; looking down from bridge
saw several trout about 1 foot long. Road then climbed. Most
of trip through vast open rolling mountains. At km. 111 from Puno
saw 1 large tinamou walking on road: Km. 110 saw 10 vicunas.
Passed various large lakes during the day and saw hundreds
of alpacas. Horses at 15000' altitude appeared to be of
normal size & conformation. At km. 101 (mileage 4543) same
