Mr. Laguna Salinos, Dto. Arequipa, Peru
this altitude (13000 by altimeter). Near Laguna Salinos saw
dead body of large skunk, black with large longitudinal white
stripes, and surprisingly long claws. Perhaps must flats

April 7, 1951 Snap traps unsprung & untouched. Shot 3
dickey birds on rocks; all unfamiliar to me. Saw flicker
some all
like bird with white tail feathers on rocks. Mary saw 1 lizard
among grass clumps; we saw one near Laguna Salinos yesterday. Cut up
murciaba + 3 birds. During day Mary shot a mouse with .22

Salitario, only gas station between Arequipa & Puno. Found it at
Km. 109 when had about 1 gallon gas left. Road climbs climbed head
of valley of wet green meadows where there were many
alpacas. At Km. 121, miles 450, saw 5 condors. Soon came
to crest of road and a flat unvegetated plain. Fork of road to
Junata marked plainly. At Km. 133 encountered first vicuñas
and in next 15 km. saw about 200. At Km. 133 a green
grassy area with lake. Counted 33 white geese with
black wings there, perhaps the Andean goose. The divide
