April 6, 1951 E. of Arequipa, Peru
went behind them. At about km. 39, elevation 10,500, saw
3 llamas. Ground 3/4 vegetated; some cactus; green aspect. At km.
43 (M 446) saw 2 condors. At Km. 50 encountered the cushion
plants growing in 3" thick layer on rocks, bright yellow-green
in color. Ichu (?) grass clumps common. This grass very
stiff and sticky at tips. At K 69, a few miles after reach-
(about 13000')
ing top of many miles of grade, came to Laguna Salinas.
Lake about 3 miles long and shallow. About 1/4 mile around edge
was drying mud, firm, with layer of white salt. Saw 300
or+ pink flamingos in the water far from shore, mostly with
heads down as if feeding. There were 200+ black and white
goose (?) on water. Too far for details to be seen. Soon en-
countered first bands of alpacas. There were young of
various sizes. All colors; black, white, brown, solid+mixed;
some browns very reddish. In all about 2000 alpacas +
llamas seen near Laguna Salinas in flat (nearly) green grazing
areas with occasional pools of water. Indian tending flock,
dressed Peruvian highlander style. One woman wore an
outfit of bright magenta and a black derby hat; she was
chasing the animals vigorously to keep them on the road.
We camped at about km. 85 (speedometer 75) on a flat
llama-tracked area of ichu clumps, 100 yds. from rocky
hill about 50' high + 200 yds. diameter. Soon noticed
viscachas on this hill. Shot one or with .22. Set 17 snap
traps among rocks near base of hill, baiting with rolled
oats. Cold evening, wind dying about sunset. Road has
been good dirt road so far + car running fine at
