April 5, 1951
Arequipa, Peru
Visited Mrs. H. H. Heller, wife of Edmund Heller. She had nice
house at 501 Av. Jorge Chaves. Dressed like a man & with short
haircut. She had collected some birds and mammals in the
Montana and was going to send them to Chicago. Was busy having
various cabinets made and dark room set up in her house.
She had a pet fox which was more or less tame and had
had a previous one which was very tame. She knew how to
get permits to ship specimens out--it was complicated if
they had any value, less complicated if without value. She had
set of Mac Bride (Flora Peru) and several other good reference
books. She had been here 2 year or more & selected Arequipa be-
cause climate dry & goods obtainable. She had been to Peru
with Edmund but not this part. Her interest mainly in getting
money for specimens. We shopped a lot, checked out of
hotel, and drove several miles toward Puno (to 500' above
Baron. 8300).
Hotel level). An Osso sign at fork about 3 mile out of town
said Km. 276 to Puno (speedometer 4419). Camped in
rocky desert area with good views Chocon & Misti. Cactus,
shrubs & herbs line covering 1/3 ground surface. Clear night.
April 6, 1951. Started 9 a.m. with speedometer reading 4422. Road
leads toward Picchu Picchu. Spdtr. 423, fork to Jesus, end of pave-
ment, and sign saying Puno 270 km. Km. 13 from Arequipa = spdtr.
426. At Km. 25 a chain across road; control station - Chichusartal
think. Had crossed 2 small rivers and seen many birds before
reaching Km. 25; many flowers in bloom including blue lupine
and a yellow daisy like flower 2" in diam. on yellow-green
shuda. Many cultivated terraces near Chichusartal and Misti prom-
