April 2, 1951 Lúna, Perú
As could get box of ammo out tomorrow. Returned to
Leceña de armas place. The little man with the moustache
( Oficial 2° de Investigaciones, Anselmo Balazar
Montoya) helped me to get the Guía de Circulación for
the ammunition & letter to get arms from aduana. Re-
turned to hotel. Worked on thesis.
April 3, 1951. To Callao where Colán got my guns
for me in about 1 1/2 hrs. Sanetti had the policy & was still
sure could get ammo out today. Took guns back to hotel.
Worked on thesis, finishing same, & sent air express (Bron-
cuff, 5/130 for 5 lbs.) to MVZ. Then to Callao. Sanetti
did not arrive until after 4 p.m. I was unable to get box
out in the short time (45 minutes) remaining. He promised
to get it out tomorrow & send it to me at Arequipa
via Dávila (camiones). I asked Colán to follow this
through for me. Returned to hotel packed, ready to
leave on plane for Arequipa tomorrow with guns but not ammo.
April 4, 1951. Took Faucett airline from Lúna to Arequipa de-
parting 7:30 a.m. but on mountain side. The Andes crest appears
to be fairly uniform in elevation with an occasional high snowy peak
projecting above it, perhaps a dozen of such peaks in the 500 miles
from Lúna to Arequipa. From this crest long barren ridges run
toward the coast. Green valleys are rare & only where land is
cultivated. Snow atop Misti has diminished in last week so that
little remains. Passports checked at Lúna but no inspection at
Arequipa. Had car gassed, carburetor cleaned & high alt. nitriding rod put
in, spark set for altitude, all at cost of $2.-. Stayed at hotel.
Visited Jack Dwyers, E.E. UU. acting consul here.
