C. Koford 37 Journal March 30, 1951 To Lima, Peru. permit was ready but that the Director who had to sign the arms permit was sick. He had seen Bernes who told him that my paper was on top of the pile. Will see Bernes tomorrow. Plane trip: - Arequipa airport is 8149 ft. elev. Good views of Chocani & Misti without buildings in the way. Challa-like cactus growing near field. I was on coast side of plane. Impression of barrenness even more than from the ground. Occasional vegetable cultivated valleys. Plane first approached coast near Pisco & had fine view of the islands. San Gallan is large + high and perhaps 3 miles off Paracas peninsula where hills are high too. Peninsula low on mainland side + Pisco area without large hills. The Chinchas were low and small compared to San Gallan. Asia Island perhaps only 1/2 mile from shore. Shore flat there but large hills 1/2 mile inland. Some minutes north of Asia passed a look in the coastline where many small boats were in a protected small protected harbor. Then crossed seawide an area of water (coastal indentation), a small guano island (lines of walls; big buildings on beach), then over land again near Pachacamac and descended to Limatambo airport. Took about 20 minutes to get through the line where 2 different people checked your name, passport, + address - even natives had to do all this. The Bolivar rooms clean and nice but more expensive than Marea (5/55 for single with bath; plenty hot water, towels, etc.). March 31, 1951. Saturday. At breakfast met El Rosa (a wife) of Calif. Acad. of Sciences. He had been collecting insects
