March 27/451. (Tuesday)Wednesday) Arequipa, Peru.
Mary found spannut with 3 young in snapdragon bush in
patio. Windy today. I worked on cardo report. Did some shopping
in afternoon. In hotel yard there is a tortoise about 3 feet
long, alive - Galapagos tortoise I suppose.
March 28/451. Visited Williams and he introduced me at the
Banco de Credit where I sold my travelers checks for 17.85 cents
per dollar and dep opened an account. Visited Panagra office
and found that air express could be sent to U.S., the cost being
about $1 per lb., and cheaper over 45 kilograms. Large pack-
ages required export license. Those small enough could be
classified as "samples" and passed by local aduana, then
shipped. Panagra showed me bills of lading where Mrs.
H.H. Heller (510 Jorge Chover) had shipped live animals
to Philadelphia recently; she should know all about making
shipments. Wrote letters. Worked on cardo MS. With Mrs. Williams
called on Jack Dunger, sitting American consul here (at Coca-
cola plant) but he was out. At Williams' met Dr. Nettle of
Lima, an American practicing in Peru. Mary had had
points in chest & he recommended X-ray & made arrangements
to get them at Isayeneche Hospital. We went there got X-rays.
Nettle examined them but found nothing wrong. Warm day with
few clouds - "winter" apparently over.
March 30, 1951. (Friday). Now not board again from Puente so am flying
to Lima today via Faucett. Plane left 11 a.m. (Arequipa time) and
arrived 3 hrs. later (3 p.m. Lima time). Went to some license
place but did not find my licenses. Went to Hotel Bolivian for the
night. Called Puente & she came over. He said my arms
