March 24, 1951
Arequipa, Peru.
(2 wks.)
have delay and trouble getting back in. Inquiries about
(2 who)
gun permits at Prefectura. They said you could get permit for a
shotgun here in a week or less but that for pistol permits
one had to go to Lima. Prices seem no worse than at Lima for
most manufactured goods. Optimus stoves 5/55, for example. Shot
guns & shells (including .410), (.22 shells) for sale at one store
I passed. Clear in morning but partly overcast most of day. Cond
milk (Arequipa variety) cheaper than in Lima; large can 5/2.
March 25, 1951 Easter Sunday. Worked on Calif. carda re-
port. Have seen many turkey vultures here but no black
vultures. A common bird in gardens is a sparrow which
appears like Zenotrichia leucophrys but which has a chest-
ut patch at nape and the feathers of top of head
raise into a sort of crest.
March 26, 1951. Mailed bat skulls for Panama lots. It
was possible to do this registered mail, without any in-
spection or papers. Large packages require a permit from
the Ministerio de Hacienda in Lima, they told me. Air rate
high - pkg. costing 5/5 by ship would cost 5/137 by
air. Worked on carda report. Talked with Wm H. Obrien,
representative of Draper & Co. (wool buyers) of Boston,
about vicuna wool & raising. Read wire from Javier
Ortiz saying that my gun permits still not ready (I
called him about this on Friday). Bought plane
ticket to Lima & return (491.50), Faucett air lines, to
depart on Friday (Mar. 30). Acacias in bloom in
hotel yard.
