March 19, 1951.
Mr. Camana, Peru.
6 p.m. and pulled off road after ascending to about 1000' elevation: sandy area of rolling high barren hills. Moon nearly full.
March 21, 1951, Departed camp ( Km. 166, speedometer 4274) at 9:30 a.m. & headed for Arequipa. Went up a long grade. 6" high grayish plants abundant on hillside; some small cactus; red succulents growing on rocks. Hundreds of burrows below surf- ace opposed by road cuts but no mounds above ground & no rodents seen. At Km. 153 came onto a plain of rocky ground and the mountainic meats, Chocroni, & Carapana came into view, snow covered on upper parts. Km. 100, speedometer 4319, the long narrow green cultivated valley of Tambillos. Stream almost clear. A few sheep. White throated swift seen, & several black vultures. At Km. 68 passed through a tunnel in rock & on opposite side came to another cultivated valley. Surrounding hills red rock & snow capped mts. in distance (took photo). At spdmw. 346 came to small town at junction Mellndez (82 km.) and Arequipa roads. Went up a very long grade to perhaps 9000 feet elevation. This through rocky & sandy hills. Through a tunnel at speedometer 4163, then down a long grade. Reddish rocks mixed with cactus & low plants - appearance like Arequipa from Colorado River near Needles. Some tall cactus. Descended to the broad green cultivated valley in which Arequipa lay. City much larger than I had expected - streetcars, for example. We put up at Hotel Turista. It seemed quiet and clean & was in a nice pink building near a small park just outside of the main part of town. Cool in evening; not cold. Moon full or nearly so.
