March 19/51
Opto. Arequipa, Peru
with shells up to 4" long; apparently people gathered these,
probably to eat. Many grew or brown long lyngade (Lislanus?)
about 10" long on rocks 10' to 100' from edge of water. These
retreated into holes in rocks or hard ground - caught 1. As
many lygide as I have ever seen at one place - perhaps one
per 100 square feet. High rocky barren hills within ½
mile of ocean edge in this area. Camped just S. of Punta
Tiroja (lighthouse) and set 10 snap traps near rocks within
200 yds. of edge ocean. At outermost point of Pt. Tiroja, a
rocky point white with guano (almost an island), and 1000+ birds
milling near this island just before sunset. At the same
time there were streams of low-flying birds skimming the
waves & flying north toward this island - at least 10,000 birds
visible at one time. An occasional piquero seen close to shore.
Inspectied traps about 9 p.m. & had one large mouse - something
like a small pale woodrat
March 20/51. At 6:30 a.m. another similar mouse in another
trap. Stratus cloud over land but clear a short distance out over
ocean. 1000+ birds visible on rock where milling last evening and
9am.
1000+ milling there (8 a.m.). Put up the 2 mile. Departed 10:30 a.m. (4/64.)
(4 miles from camp)
it was small but had 3 bottles. The guard at the garita told me it

was 4 hours to Otos. Sign said 321 Km. to Arequipa. At speedometer #175
encountered salvaro-like cactus on steep rocky slopes otherwise with
almost no vegetation. Costier for 3½ miles. At speedometer #182 there
was a roadside spring where we filled water cans. Beautiful views
of ocean as road close to surf & rocky shore (within 50 yards often).
Some sand dunes & drifting sord on road. Saw many long slim,
