C. Koford 29 Journal March 18, 1951 Dpto. Arequipa, Peru with black tip 1/4, white posterior margin wings). The Franklin & gray gulls fed in surf sand often wave swept & flew when encoming waves reached them. Departed for Chala at noon. This area more interesting then previous sites as some vegetation. Low shrub with yellow composite flowers 1 1/2 inches diams. Observed much of food. Also foreboun along road & a yellow poppy. Shrubs so formed fairly solid cover in a some slope. Pepper trees & green acacia - like trees trees in sandy can- yons. Saw several small birds near road. Saw 1 lizard 10" long & greenish on road. Chala at about Km. 645. Small town but modern appearing Hotel Turista. Had to show passport & driver's license to men at control station. The international drivers license seems to be recognized by them & they were very polite & unoffensive. Chala at 5, end of a long curving sand beach with beautiful surf of blue water. Saw sandrots here, many brown pelicans, a caged the dark gray gulls (100+), and 2 osprey (?) like hawks with long wings flying marsh- hawk-like over the surf (white underparts & under wings). Chala appeared like a pleasant place to stay but surrounding region was rocky waste with no cultivation. Gold mines about 40 km. into mountaines. ) . Pavement ended Km. 678, then cinderoy & unpaved - one truck driver called it "feo." Road improved somewhat after Km. 710. Shore rocky with boulders in surf and rocky points projecting into ocean. Many of these points snow white with guano although few birds on them. Saw sandrots. Near Km. 685 walked 200 yds. to beach. Many shells of large sea urchins and of Fissurella - like mollusces.
