Nr. Pisco, Peru.
and marshy area. Many swallows (black throated light breast),
bluish black - like bower bur. but tail not so forked). Black - red
slits in water (10+). Franklin gulls (10+). Saw first reptiles
(12" lizard on road), and large gopher - like rodent running on
ground. Camped at km 253 on a sandy + rocky knoll overlooking
Pisco. Chincha Islands plain in the distance. Set 10 snap traps in
course
broken area of grass near the road. Warm evening. Many
mosquitoes. Dined on bananas fried in Holland canned butter accom-
pained by Cello beer. High hills or headlands of point south
of Pisco (carder route? for trade going to San Gabon?). Many
buses of villages on roads. Some large station wagons labeled
"Sea Express,"
March 18, 1951. At start at start
Apdonetti 855, K250 from near Pisco. Did not take
turnoff to Pisco. Kilometer 258, date palm (wild?) and sand, palms
ending K 262. Then plain of sand, scrubby palms, thorny
bushes + trees, with hummocks bearing grass or fads, this
ending K 275. Then sand desert. K287, 20t palms + sand
mounds bearing grain bushes - road excellent in this area. K297,
200t palms + grass on sand but not cultivated. Mile 397,
Km. 314, cultivated flat grain area. Saw a sparrow hawk.
saw. Cattle + planted trees. Miles 405, Sea, at 1:30 p.m. -
large town. Clear sky overhead but cumulo-number clouds
over mountains to east. Warm + dry. Many green acacia-like
scrubby tree, probably thorny. Green area ended K 360. Then
road straight through desolate rocky water. At mile 460, a
tunnel through rock, then road descends sharp switch -
backs. Miles 462 (K 418) river crossed via bridge. Green
