it. He was understanding but had to pay the men, he said. The guard of the cars had to be paid $5/60 for 2 days "wage" too. Hitched jeep to trailer & put gas in. We rushed about from man to man getting signatures, had to go to Callao & cash traveler's checks to get money, etc. Missed by the one man - the last one - getting the car out today (Saturday). This means more pay for the watchmen - double on Sunday. Returned to Mangu Hotel.
Shopped. Yesterday afternoon Enrique Avila called on me at the hotel. He spoke good English. Claimed to speak Quechua & Aymara as well, a native of Puno. Now he worked for Cea Adm. del Guarco studying the 3 main guanos birds ( Cormorant, Gula, & brown pelican ). He was rather quite a loud & showoff character - claimed to be born pal of Sterling Leopold, Wm. Vogt, B.C. Murphy, Aly Ustman, etc. He was hoping to leave the guanos so. Later this year & go to Cornell on a fellowship to study marine biology. He wanted me to send some mollusc specimens to someone named Termer at Harvard - he could not do without expert advice. He was about to start on vacation to Arequipa & Puno with wife & daughter. Going to give a few lectures at Univ. of Arequipa. Like everyone else he recommended seeing Nicholson at (M.D.S.) arequipa (vice-retin of U. of A.). He thought that Dr. Maxime Kuczynski Goddard, of Meraflor, could give me much information on the Puno region as connected with some religious group there.
