Casa Rejora, Calle Press 6 + 3. One could usually get .22
shot shells and shotgun shells there. You had to have a licencia de
in order
to buy ammunition. Received letter from Colin Gordon dated
(Chicago)
March 5 + stamped at 9:30 p.m. in answer to mine mailed March 3.
Street system different here. The "calles" are only one
block long, each bearing a different name. Now the "jirones"
have been added which have same name for whole length.
So a place has both a "calle" & "jiron" address. There are
several avenidas - wide, two streets separated by a park-
sort of a divided highway. There are five. The other streets
are narrow, the sidewalks are only wide enough for 2 persons
side by side, and the tranvian graze people standing
on the curb (actually overlap sidewalk on turns).
March 8, 1951. Bought necessary tax stamps at Caja de
Depositos and took application for ammunition permit to Min-
istérios de Gobierno. Also went to Ministerio de Fomento to look for
maps but it did not open until 11 a.m. Returned to hotel. Shopped
for books and other items. The Intendencia book store had
F.L. Veneroso "Catalogo alfabético" etc but they wanted S/1.05 for
it and even more for Maccagno's "Los Ayuntamientos Peruanos".
Weberbauer "El Mundo Vegetal ... et c." was selling for S/.60,
about $4.00 (12.50 in USA), looked for Enrique Cevilla
at the guano company but he was not in. Went to visit
cardo in office of this Compañía Administradora del Guano".
Bought large pressure cooker ($ 2.3) and other items. Prices
of U.S.A. kitchen were about 25% higher than in U.S., but
everything from automatic washers & vacuum cleaners to
