C. Koford Journal March 4, 1951 Lima, Peru Sunday: We hired a taxi for $2.50/lower and visited the "muelles" at Callao. Several ships unloading at good pier. The large barren island of San Lorenzo partly protects the harbor but there are 2 long jetties too. Muck-squaws and gold ore in sacs on the docks. Beach here made up of rounded rocks about 6" in diameter, uniform in size. A few lothos here (at the "punta") and a wide walk with a few stands selling delicious looking porks bacon sandwiches. Several small swallows with white breast and blue backs flitted low over the rocky beach; a few gannets in the surf. Flocks of Franklin? gulls with indistinct black markings on hood. Brown pelicans. A nice clean rock beach. We returned via a road bordering the ocean - the Costa Negra- where beach was of smaller rocks and the surf was supposed to be dangerous for bathers. Returned to Hotel Mary. Tall corn and cotton grew in some fields along the way. The contrast was strong between the low homes of the rich and poor. Our driver pointed this out many times - also the somptuous luxury of the military. He said that the "obresor" were now much better off than several years ago, that there were some hospitals for them and one large housing develop- ment near Lima. March 5, 1951. Then went to a post- port photo place and had profile picture taken for
