Barro Colorado I/sland, C.Z.
north of lake. Hiked up Dorset trail looking for bats.
Flushed 2 or 3 from tree - these flew rapidly away. Walked along Thomas Barbour trail and shot a pewee (?). Then along Van Tyne trail and took detour to Big Tree. The tree was biggest I have seen on Barro Colorado. A peccary grunted and ran from base of tree as I approached. Found about 40 Sarcopteryx lilivata on trunk of the big tree from 5 to 20 feet above ground and between the high buttresses in a light area. Shot about 6 of these (107, 59 g). Shot an ant worn near this tree. Returned to laboratory area. Made a box for shipping specimens. Put up 3 birds. Prepared to depart.
about 4:15 p.m. we left in launch for Pigalle and took the 5 p.m. train for Panama City from there. Returned to the Tivoli Hotel. Completed putting up the Sarcopteryx.
