C. Koford Journal February 24, 1951 Barro Colorado Island, Canal Zone of about 15 visitors, mostly PP's, live with Betek today. No catch in snaptraps. Visited a hollow tree on Armour trail and shot up into it but discovered no bats there. Saw another refaux mot-mot. Tail swinging side to side about 30° with a quick motion stopping at end of swing. Occasionally tail raised dorsally about 30°. Separate ends of retrices on this bird. Prepared to go to Fuentes house for the night. Much rain today. Departed about 4:30 p.m. and hiked via Tower and T.G. Pearson trail to Fuentes house. Saw a Tinamotis (I think) on ground near tower. Amazons screaming near Fuentes house. This house about 100 yds. uphill from edge of water in a small clearing. About 15X15 in size and built up on posts as other houses in this area. Set 13 snap traps. Saw about 3 bats at dusk but could not catch them. Rain until midnight. February 25, 1951. Three Rhampastos feeding in the 50' from Fuentes house. Many unidentified bird sounds. Parrots made much noise. Saw no mammals & traps not touched. Fresh cat track (ocelot?) in trail. One muscovy duck (?) seen at edge water. Green heron flew into tree along Venusia trail as I started back for laboratory. Saw another refaux mot-mot. Overcast but only an occasional light sprinkle. Shot up into another hollow tree but dislodged no bats. Returned to lab via Fred Miller and Bourbon Lathrop trails. Mary had left a banana hanging in open building last night but had caught no bats that way. Perhaps rain inhibited flight of bats. We took a ride in a
