February 23, 1951 Barro Colorado Island, Canal Zone
for Frijoles. About 8 a.m. arrived Frijoles. Then met Mr. & Mrs. Masland who were also visiting Barro Colorado. Masland from Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Our family stayed at a 3 bed green wooden house at a lower level than laboratory. I went with Masland and his wife for a tour of some trails guided by Gregorio, a dark boy who spoke only Spanish. We saw about 3 "lagotis" "conejos" (capybara?), a small deer, white-faced monkey, a hawk (Buteo), and a few birds (too poorly seen to identify). A man named Claudio accompanied us part of the way; he was collecting fruits to look for fruit flies. The yellow-flowered abacácan (spelling?) in bloom. Saw one refaous not-not. Returned to laboratory for lunch. Upon arrival at our house we saw about .6 bats, apparently fruit-eating bats with short tails, on the screens. These lively and we could not catch them by the time we unpacked our net, these were gone. Found about 20 Myptis under eaves on south side of Kodak building. These seemed to be all F.F.'s - took a few. Under eaves on the stairs Betch house and Thomas Barbour house, there were males alone alongside the 2x4 rafters. Took a walk to the Tower with Mary in the afternoon. We saw an anteater climb a tree and ascend very slender stalks. Its claws were long and tail somewhat prehensile. Also glimpsed a peccary and a yellow-breasted trogon (Trogonus). Saw a red-headed marmoset with black body in dark forest, low down. At noon two tapirs came to kitchen area and were so tame that the children fondled them and sat on them. One deer (Odocoileus) was only slightly less tame. See Topina
