November 13, 1952 5 mi. NE Gamboa
Juan Mina Station, CMT, Canal Zone
Got shot in early morning after heard from house. It
made one pass at fish & apparently wounded it, then perked it
up with hind feet & tail membrane on next pass. Van Horn is
a good observer with 25+ years in the Tropics & knows the
English names of most animals; speaks good English too.
November 14, 1952 Van Horn took me hunting near & on
waterways in boat. I shot a Chloroceryle, 2 Helonias,
woodpecker, & bobo-keron (decided last). Collected Doriis
& Molossus from attic of main house near river.
November 15, 1952. With Henry in boat, hunted along
waterways. Shot a 3 toed sloth in top of tree. 4 shots of
shotgun at 40+ yds. necessary to bring it down. To skin,
& skeleton made. In evening hunted from boat with light &
shot 2 Nyctilinae from trees along river, a small possum
(21697), & another kind of possum which fell in river & was
lost. Saw 2 other possums. Henry said Cockleris appeared
at night sometimes, along river banks.
November 16, 1952. Walked in woods with Henry but
shot only a trogon. From boat shot woodpecker. Saw por
rats (3 sizes live) & tarsiers. Heard black sloths & me
orchards at Juan Mina, tinamous (& 2 days very quiet).
Collected 72 Underma nyctinera from underside of a
cocoanut palm leaf 15' above ground. Started to night
hunt but rain interfered. Usually 3 or 4 showers a day,
on other hand, lasting about 1/2 hr. Most rain in afternoon.
Facilities here very good for collecting birds but the
possum & deer have been shot out to great extent.
