November 11, 1952 Canal Zone (Ancon)
Stayed at Trivoli Hotel after arrival this morning.
Chmed Betek & Berger Lab. T. Trapido & Farnshield
visited with us in afternoon. A captive Abro-
coma died in transit; a young or surviv - put in
cool place by Trapido.
November 13, 1952 To Juan Mina station, Chagres River
Trapido took us to Bambua in Berger Mem. Lab
car. En route stopped at Summit Experimental
Gardens & took several Cudonia of 50+ seen in
groups 1 - 10 under fold of cat palm leaf. The
fan-shaped leaf has the thick ribs cut about 1/3
way from end, then end drops down forming a
"tent" for the lute. The date 3-15' from ground
in palmas 20' high where many people pass & beside a
road. At Bambua we were met at noon by Harry Van
Norn, who works at B.M.L. station at Juan Mina, with
a cayuco with outboard. A nice ride of 1/2 hr. up the
Chagres to the station. We were given a nice bungalow
to stay in & do our housekeeping. Many birds call-
ing. Parrots seen & heard. Rain on & off from noon on.
In evening shot a Nyctiluna & Nyctidromus by
eyeskin or grapefruit torches. The former in a tree &
said by Van Horn to never be on ground. Nyctibius
called "lo-hio" for its call. Saw Drias & Melanus
fly from the main house at edge water at station in early
me a
dusk. Van Horn showed me feckled fish eating bat about 2x
size Drias which he shot here recently. He said the
