Tatio Geysers/4000', Prov. Antof.
(Buffs)
in small stream 38°C. Frogs swim in it but usually on mud
at edge when temps. 27°C., or with only part body in water.
Air temp. +8°C. at this time. Temperatures 8° frogs
taken. Mostly 24-28°C. One, snatched from water, 32°C.
Perhaps couldn't live long in the hot water. This water
strong in minerals so nauseating to try to drink.
November 1, 1952 -6 ½ C. last night. Looked for
tinamouins. Traps (15) held 5 alb. andinus, + P. darwini,
all discarded. Some old apparent albusana tracks here. In
afternoon drove on yarta road around E. side of
geyser flat but saw no shear or tinamous. Usual
cold W. wind in afternoon. Occasional pair huellatas
seen near geysers or stream entering from S.
To nr. Ojos San Pedro
November 2, 1952 Sunday. Temp. -5 ½ C. Clear search-
ed for tinamouins + saw group of 1 ad., 8 or 9 juvs.
Black tetrionid (?) beetle common walking on surface.
Drove with trail to nr. Ojos San Pedro & camped.
November 3 1952. At a salty muddy shallow isolated lagoon,
about 100 X 300 yds. in size, saw up to 55 flamingos (arrived
8-9 a.m.), avocets (2 specimens), andean gull, Baird's sand-
piper, andean planer, Lessonia. Set 10 trap + 2 steel traps near
rocks & tola. ~ 2 mi. E. Ojos San Pedro 12500'
November 4, (952. Temp. min. -8 ½ C. Wind in early night
here; calm to about 10 a.m. Overies + r-str. overcast yester-
day & today. Waited for flamingos - saw 30+ but got
none. Shot 1 gull (specimen). Drove to Est. San Pedro
for supplies & returned to camp.
