Tocañce, 14000', 60 mi. ENE Calama,
Min. temp. -10 1/2° C. - coldest we have experienced here. Much
Trinometa's calling & I searched for nests all morning. Followed
alrocerana (?)
ad duas tracks most of afternoon & set 10 traps. Little Calm
in early morning & max. of fair breeze (from W.) all day.
Max. temp. +11° C. Car out of order with valve(?) trouble.
October 14, 1952 Traps held; Alse andrium (discarded).
Min. temp. -4° C. - might clear & calm as previous one!
max. temp. 14° C.
I walked 3 hrs. to Tocañce Springs (15 hrs. E. Tocañce)
and phoned Chiqui for mail & info. 3 stil traps out
October 15, 1952. Traps held; Phyllotis sublimus (to
Mamm call.) Tracked Trinometa & Alrocerana . Set 15
snap traps & 5 stil traps (for alrocerana). Min. temp. -3°
max. +13 1/2 °C. Clear with mod. W. wind.
October 16, 1952. Min. temp. - 5° C. Max wind then
yesterday. Caretaker at Tocañce Springs, there 2 yrs,
at 14000'
says rarely snow here, but cloudy with occa-
sional slavers in Jan.-Feb. with solid snow
on the peaks. Our locality probably better called
Lunzor, near SW base of that mountain. Snap traps
held 2 P. darwinii (discarded), & a small ot alro-
cora (stil traps) kept alive. Thin cirrus clouds
today. Walked Tocañce Spr. & back. Awaited tax for car;
it came [illegible] often dark so put it off until morning, Max. 13° C.
October 17, 1952. Min. temp. -4 °C. 8/10 alto cumulus
overcast & calm at 7 a.m., but soon windy. Got taxed
to San Pedro for car repairs. Walked on car. Stayed
with Erik Nielsen & family who were very hospitable.
