C. Koford Journal CHILE October 8, 1952 Tocones, 60 mi. ENE Calama, Prov. Antofagasta, 3 steel traps for Otomys ; got one by 6 p.m. Fair wind in afternoon but not bothersome - calmest day we have experienced in this area. October 9, 1952 Min. temp. - 4° C. Calm clear night & calm morning. At 7 a.m. I to car parked near Tricostei nest and +1:55-4:10 p.m. observed nest to 7:10. Still streaks of old snow or ice in area. 2 traps taken today. Traps held 2 P. derivini. I took up 10 snap traps & set 35 other in sand, tules, & rocks. Cirrus clouds & cold wind by 1 p.m., much overcast in afternoon. Found apparent sign of October onys (many droppings under large boulders). +11½° C. October 10, 1952 Min. temp. - 5½° C. (ground level under trailer). Traps held 4 Akodon andinus, 2 P. derivini, 2 Eligmodontia, old trap lim with nothing so all traps taken up save 2 steel traps near Albornoz Lurion. Clear & fair breeze by 10 a.m. Mary followed tinamou tracks about 4 hrs. today; many tracks but no nest found. Drove to Toconé Springs (2 km. W. of camp) where there are buildings & men associated with water intake for Chupui. October 11, 1952. Traps held 4 Akodon andinus, 1 Phyllotis sublimis. Took up all traps. Min. temp -6½°; scarc Clear & calm in morning. Looked for tinamou tracks in afternoon. Set only 9 traps. Max. temp. +10° C. October 12, 1952. Traps held 2 P. derivini, 1 Akodon andinus (all dead). I followed tinamou tracks in morning, Mary in afternoon. Wind from S a.m., from W. Min. temp. -9° C.
