October 5, 1952 Tatio Geysers, 57 mi. E. by N. Calama, a
Traps held 2 Akodon andinus (discarded). Searched for Ti-
ranetis & found hundreds tracks but no birds. Much vic-
coba sign but none seen. Calm until about 9 a.m., then stray
wind. Saw tracks & rhoe. Saw 2 carlilex ducks. In
afternoon we drove back to the stream above Toconce &
camped in area with, sand, tolo, & bunchgrass.
October 6, 1952 Nr. Toconce, 60 mi. ENE Calama, 1700'
Freezing calm clear night. Saw 3 Tiranetis near camp. We
drove back O to Ojos San Pedro (30 mi.), thence about 12 mi.
up road toward Pampa Perdida, looking for vicuna,
rhea & tiranetes. Saw 1 rheas & 1 vicuna & many tracks.
Very little travel on this road. Returned to Est. San Pedro
for gasoline, then back to trails at Toconce. From Est.
San Pedro, about 17 mi. to Ojos, & 7 to camp. Stray wind
from W. from 9 a.m. on.
October 7, 1952 Nr. Toconce, 1700'
Cler calm freezing night. I searched hills E. of road for
3 hours but saw only 1 group (3) tiranetes. Found tracks
1 rheas & many foots. Hundreds of Otomayx leucurus in
some areas but few showed fresh workings. Set 32
slope traps, 2 steel traps, 4 Mecalue traps; near rocks, grass,
tolo in bottom quebrada.
October 8, 1952 Traps held 5 Phyllotis darwini, 2 Ah-
odon andinus, 1 Akroana acrisa (steel trap at mouth round
burrow with trailing pile of fine soil). Spent 2 hrs. looking
for Tiranetis & found nest with 12 eggs. No wind
this morning; breezy by 10:30 a.m. Clear. Min. temp. -7° C, set
