C. Koford 203 Journal Prov. Antof, Chile October 3, 1952 Nr. Volcan Putana, 66 mi. E. Calama, Tula, & the red brown rocks of volcanic probes rising a few miles to eastward. 3.3 miles from where road reach- ed geyser, a clean small stream crossed, with road branch- ing off to east (to sulphur a yante probably). 7.2 miles from gyrsin a sandy area with many Trianostri troches. 7.8 miles from gyrsers a light point in road at 17400. Then [illegible] went straight toward a sulphur plant on vast rocky pampa, & we took a slightly poorer left branch. Many Trianostri troches here. On this road we went 7.6 miles, crossing one small stream en route, & camped by a clean stream 2-3 yds. wide. Road led over bunch grass & rocky pampa. Saw occasional fires pile, probably of vicunas, & saw 2 Trianostri men camps. I 14508' set 24 snap traps in rocks near stream. Much vicunca sign here. Putana prominent about 5 miles to S., & another peak to SE at about same distance were smoking. Strong wind in afternoon. ½ overcast in afternoon. October 4, 1952 Clean freezing night; calm into morning. Traps held. P. lewinii: Hunted Trianostri 1 hour & saw 1. Heard attoquin alarm call (flight). Principal grass a yellowish spiny bunch grass (Festuca?), to 1' high. A fine early bunch grass near road & stream (to 6"high). A kind of Womeria & 20 thick stots near stream, to 1'tall. Drove on to west base of volcano Putana (14800'; 70 mi. from ojo San Pedro). Yante being loaded into trucks there. Returned to camp, then with trailer back to Tatis lagoon. Camped. Set 30 snap traps.
