October 2, 1952
To nr. Toconce, 60 mi. ENE Calama,
out saw on rheas, 13 mi. to Deloli road, 17 1/2 miles to
road to Calama (sulphur digging). 3 1/2 mi. to Torcone >
quirlada
road & we camped near it. Saw a vicuna near 17 1/2
+ 25 miles, a rheas near 25. Many Tiramotis tracks at
road near head of the Toconce guirłada. Long gentle
brush grass (brown) slope, some tolo & yacata+
rocks, + slopes reaching to precipitous bare volcanic
peaks to east. Some more on peak - old appearing.
Many side roads & main road very good the cordon
eyed: Yacatas & sulphur tracks use these roads.
Toconce has dam & is source potable water for Chuqui;
Many more-tracks sin sand among rocks. I set 30
traps on sandy slope near rocks, yacata, tolo. Wind
strong in afternoon.
October 3, 1952
To nr. Putana
Clear calm freezing night. Traps held 2 Phylotis
derivini (?) (1 spec., discarded), 2 Abadon andinus (disc-
arded - to Mann in formalin), 1 Phylotis sublimis. About
noon we drove on toward Putana (S.). Road good dirt
+ used daily dry sulphur & yacata trucks . 31 miles
from Ojos S. P. a clear small stream (Toconce drainage probably).
Then much ascent to a pass at 14000'; 37.1 mi. from Ojos.
Then descent to the leyers of Atico, 14000', 45 mi. from
Ojos. A pampa about 2 miles long here with 20+ bovid
and spurting water holes. Saw 2 huellotas + 2 andill
era ducks here & many Tiramotis tracks. Some
llamas also in vicinity. Spiny brush grass, short
