C. Koford 1952 Journal 198 Dpto. Tarapaca, CHILE September 18, 1952 To Caritaya, 12000 ft. We drove on to Caritaya. Road poor & narrow about 70 miles from road to area. Some shrubs at 7500 ft., much lower than in Chiquicamota area. At La Alta Camina a fork descended to a cultivated bottom of a quebrada. Tall folo of 3m+ spires (4' high) on slope at 12500 ft. Another fork fork descends to a stream. Highest point 13300' from which road descends to a 3 mile wide rocky pampa with yellow-flowered tolas about 1' high & occasional clumps cactus. A dam here & km. long lake. Buildings with 1 family & 3 carabineros here. September 19, 1952 Caritaya The university has acquired 3 living buildings here & Mann hopes to get people to come here & study. Unfortunately the place is 1-2 miles from the hills & thus are no side roads. Mann took on [David L.] Oncellurus (shot) about 3 hrs. mile ride to N. They have taken Alrocoma cinerea, Oxtodontomyx, and Chinchilluba on a rocky hill 1km. S. of buildings. Mann said he once took 5 young Tiranetis on the road nearby. Vicuna's said to be nearly - tho we saw none. A smaller tiranete (than Tiriameti) said to be found a few hours away by mule. Conoptera reg & Charophastes (digs holes at base of palm as pen) said by Mann to be here. Humules at Espino about 31/2 hrs by mule. Flamings here but not now. Windy after 4:30 a.m. A few llamas in vicinity. At a village (at base of nevado) 4 hrs. by mule from
