Tinamotis pentlandi
March 28 Juaylarco, 15300'
walked around the hill to west and
then south along base of ridge, passing
within 150 ft. below nest. No other
tracks near nest. I followed tracks
until snow too melted - by this time
400 yd. from nest still going south.
Watched nest till 11:00 but saw none.
March 29 Watching nest 2. at 9:40 an heard brief
calling. At 9:45 saw bird 50 yd. above
nest, just standing. Then it took a few
slow steps, then began walking toward nest.
9:50 A bird is sitting on nest - hasn't
been there more than about 3 min. as have
been checking nest while watching other
bird (which is still walking toward nest).
Bird on nest got up, walked 2 ft. away,
then back & sat on nest, rocked back &
forth from one foot to other several times,
once pecked at ground beside nest, stayed
3 to 5 minutes, stood & walked away.
About 10 ft. from nest passed other bird
coming. 2 paid no attention. 2nd bird
sat on nest while first continued to
walk away. 2nd stayed 4 or 5 minutes,
also rocked sideways several different
times while sitting and once pecked at
ground, then stood up & walked rapidly
