September 14, 1952
Playa Blanca nr. Iquique, Peru
zoological work - 1½ million pesos ($12,000±).
September 15 Odd shopping in Iquique. Mann says
he has shot 2 Oreosaurus, one slightly north of Cortaya.
a research station is being started at Tranque de Cortaya;
there are some old buildings which might be made habitable.
Northwest forests in Chile said to be at Ovalle.
September 16, 1952 Mann's group went 100 km. down
coast to Pabellon de Lica & got 8 of many Desmodus
in a cave. Yesterday we looked in an old cave at Punta
Gorda, near the high tide marks, where Anders Nielsen,
Danish druggist of Iquique, once found Desmodus (he
showed us one in alcohol). Mann has taken only 3 or 4;
only only near Cuya (north Camarones River). He says
there are Todarias at Arica. On a previous trip they
saw many caracaras going to Pabellon de Roca - this
time only 1. Several people have told me that Bto. Patuco
is good carcar spot. I got radiator repair in Iquique,
and met Harold Gilmore (spell?) & F.H. Nemberstone
(English) of the Sea Solitaires.
September 17 To Rio Tara, Poto. Tarapaca
Mann's group to Iquique for repair & supplies. Our
family with trailer drove via Nemberstone & Zapiga
to turn off to Cortaya (113 km. without the road to
Arica) and camped. Some farming and pepper trees &
large than brush in Timulcho & Tara quebradas,
both only 200 yds. wide at bottom but with
flowing clear stream.
