September 7, 1952 To Playa Blanca nr. Iquique, P. Tampo.
Moved trailer to Playa Blanca, about 15 km. S. of
Iquique on the coast. Two parties told me there
were cardos here on the coast, mainly at Topile
(cp.?), about 15 km. S. from Iquique, where there were
guaneras. The ornithologist Bird said to have camp-ed near here for 2 weeks in 1940.
September 8, 1952 Playa Blanca
Pelicans & black-backed large gulls common; a
gray & white tern, dowitcher (?) which flies with
loud whistling cries, small slaver, Cendodes
on rocks at edge waves, also Liolemmus next to
water, occasional strings of Cormorants, many
turkey vultures. In retrospect, took turkey & black
vultures over beach at Arica: 20 turkey vulture
in a group near Humberton Sept. 6. Several ten-
nels in banks near beach at Colija, S. of Topi-le.
Toco.
See say there are bats in caves near
Pisagua. Flocks 50+ of the small gold-sparlet dove
near Ojos de San Pedro. Caracaras occasionally
seen on beaches between Tocopilla & Antofagasta. Hudson-
Curler
in boat common here; a small tern also present.
September 14, 1952 Playa Blanca
In evening Dr. Man & 3 of companions arrived in
a sort of German jeep with a Higgins trailer.
They had driven long hours for 6 days, the vehicle
being low powered & slow. This year, for the
