September 4, 1952 E.of San Pedro, Dpto. Antofagasta
pass at 15000', then road dropped 300' to rocky
pampa. Yarato, tola, & boulders on slopes, &
mescalas in rocks - a long haired bromish
one. Probably Tinamotis here too. Hard wind all day.
This spot about 20 miles from Ojos. We went back
to Ojos, seeing a group of 20 vicuñas + one vicuña on the way. Then took Tocopilla road about 16 miles east (a good rather flat dirt road much used by sulphur miners). Turned off at a sign saying Siloli, crossed clear small stream, & found ed to head of water line at 14500'. Water there, rocks, bunch grass, & perhaps a good place to camp & study. Better road than Cero Scura & O.I. without water (snowy, tho). Strong wind. We descended to near Ojos and camped in a hut.
September 5, 1952 To nr. Quillagua, N. Antofagasta
We returned to Chiguai. (Dr Eric Nielsen in San Pedro mentioned for reference). Rudolph out. Still strong windsy. We took Tocopilla road - narrow but paved. It ascended to a summit, then descended in a straight road to the west. Turned N. and camped on pampa near Quillagua. In lower country said to be windy & rough because of dangerous to camp near rocks - because of Chagasi disease.
September 6, 1952 To Iquique, Prov. Tarapacá
Drove on to Iquique, about 6 hrs. from Quillagua, & still stayed at hotel.
