September 3, 1952 Nr. Chugucamota, Prov. Antof.
copper mine (open terrace type) with refining
plant, railroad, + small associated town. At
the general office was an American in charge, + the
chief engineer was William Rudolph. R. was old-
timer there + interested in the country. He gave
me maps + recommended three areas - one near
Cerro Inca, or near Inacaliri (source of Chugui
water), or near Volcan Putana + all at the Boliv-
ian border - for vicuñas, rheas, + penguins. Chugui
would be a good base because of Americans +
facilities there, + trucks, roads, hospital. A captive
area in yard by hospital. We departed in after-
oon + drove to near the San Pedro station, thence
eastward to Ojos de San Pedro (warm springs), +
camped. Volcan Cerro of San Pedro + San Pablo
prominent. Food, didn't hurt good enough. Saw
juncos + grass clumps, but of birds not famil-
iar to us from Peru, above 11500'. Ojos about 12500'.

all night from W., + all day too.
September 4, 1952 E. of San Pedro
Ojos about 13 mi. from San Pedro, S.P. 35 mi. from
Chugui. We drove east on road N. of Ojos to
Pampa Perdida + near Cerro Inca. Road thru
lunch grass up long slope. Saw group 5 rheas
at 14500' (first summit), + 5 vicuñas. Many
