C. Koford 193 Journal August 30, 1952 Iquique, Chile Spent most of day in Iquique. Phoned Mann in San tiago; he said he would come up about Sept. 10. Chilean canned goods cheaper than imported brands in Peru + not bad. Imported canned goods very scarce. We left trailer at hotel & set out for Antofagasta in jeeps, camping before reaching Humboldtone. Time & date here is 1 hr. ahead of Peru - so sun rises late. August 31, 1952 To Tocopilla, Prov. Antofagasta Drove own pampa & rolling country, past many salitre oficinas, to near Tocopilla. A control at Quell- aqua. Thorny trees 30' tall + cultivation on flood plain of Rio Loa. September 1, 1952 To Antofagasta, Chile Drove down coast to Antofagasta. Coast mostly rocky. Saw a carav 100 km. N. of Antofagasta. Long sandy beach near Mejillones. Last 80 km. of road well paved, smooth, + straight. Stayed at a hotel, in M. being still sick. September 2, 1952 To Chiguicamate, Prov. Antofagasta nor. Calama; Stopped some. Town like Iquique but larger. Ships in harbor. No modern hotels but a huge one building. A saltpeetr + copper town. Drove to near Calama road after excellent + paved, again rough country.
