Entered Chile
August 26, 1952
Arica Chile
delayed us an hour. No inspection or bother then,
only stopping at a control for a few minutes.
Chilean officials took 1/2 hr. to write in thin books
+ take a glance in trailer. The auto carnets worked
fine with no delays. Camped on outskirts of
Arica.

Arica to Camarones, Chile
In Arica changed money at 128 to 1 at a travel office,
Bankes didn't want it. Had to get a manifesto
from Advena - this took only a few minutes so
no inspection. Saw 8 carders on a guano
island 1/4 mile in front of the Pacific Hotel. People
friendly and turn interesting. A truckload of
swordfish (alfosca) seen. We drove 3. about
50 km. to Choca. Here they looked at papers +
gave superficial looks in trailer, there was one boy
of the "cariboneros" + not the customs. As a
note from the Chilean consul in Tacna may have
helped in all these border dealings. We asc-
ended out of quebrada to Pampa Camarones +
camped. These wide deep quebradas again
a lot of time to descend + ascend. Some gum-
ery + thorny brushy 15' trees in Choca area.
Pampas sandy + rocky + vegetationless.
