August 23, 1952 To about 8 mi. NE Tarata, 13000', Dpto. Tacna
to Arquipa. Set 20 traps near rocks & Polylepis.
Clean all day today, + usually windy.
August 24, 1952 | To nr. Tacna, Dpto. Tacna.
Traps held 2 Akodon (bullepsihi?), 1 P. darwini,
2 soft furred Chyllati. Clean + windy. We drove
to Tarata & as to Tacna camped below it. Tarata
has rushes, alfalfa or ternoas, + appearance like
Peruio area - hilly, cultivated, with variety of plants
at about 10000'. Parachitos and other birds in near Tarata
& another town a few miles toward Tacna. Then road
ascended to 11500', then down in dry desert country.
August 25, 1952. Tacna
Drove on to near Tacna & camped near edge
of town. Tacna in a wide flat bottomed canyon
with considerable greenery though surrounding
area is sandy desert. The Chilean consul, Luis
Mond Danner, spoke English + was very hospit-
able. It took but a few minutes to get visas.
With this, the Inspeccion de Extranjera did not
hesitate in giving us our cedula de salida.
All this at no cost. Camped at edge town; packed
specimens for shipping to Mrs. Heller at Arquipa.
Went into night.
August 26, 1952 To nr. Arica, Chile
Completed packing specimens + shipped them by
air to Mrs. Heller. In mid afternoon we headed
