August 19/1952
Hunted 7:30 - 10 a.m. Shot 2 [illegible], caught a large
snake. Yr cumulus clouds by 10:30 a.m.
August 20, 1952.
To Puno
Secured repaired car and drove with trails to Puno.
Cochapata morning - clear but grew cold, freezing a few.
August 21, 1952
To nr. Mazocruz Dpto. Puno
Drove from Puno to Ilave, then on Tarma road to
near Neda. Payruruni. Set no traps.
August 22, 1952
To nr. Challapalca, Dpto. Puno
Drove toward Tarma & camped near a bridge at
[km. 175 from Tarma]
end of pampa, a few miles short of Challapalca central
station. Set 20 snap traps in rocks near giant
tola. Saw no bears tho said to be on the pampa.
100+ vicunas on pampa, mixed with alpacas & also
in scattered tola on gentle slopes.
August 23 1952.
To nr. Tarata, Dpto. Tarma
Traps held 3 A. jelskii, 2 P. sublinis, 1 P. lalini-
ciensis (?). Many put up 2 jelskii; 2a sublinis &
lalinensis. Drove on slowly past Challapalca. Said
to be shear nearby. Summit of road km. 133
from Tarma. Much yerta between Livine & 133.
Road rose to 15500' at Livine, about 15300 at 133. The
descended only 500' in next 8 miles, then down by
gentle switchbacks. We camped at 13000' near
km. 110. This in belt of scattered Polylipix about
6' high, 60+ shrubs reaching knee height, & many
rocks. Grassy slopes with Polylipix brush across
canyons. Aspect of area & road like descending
