August 15, 1952. Saturday 3 mi. SW Juliaca Dpto. Puno,
Nunited Natures Nothura 1 1/2 hrs. Took up steel traps.
Set 20 snap traps on hill near cliffs + dry bunch grass.
August 16, 1952. Traps held 2 minn. P. darwini.
Went to Juliaca. Caught 5 Diolaeumus. Less than
1/10 clouds all day today with fair breezes.
August 17, 1952. Sunday. Traps (20) held: P. pictus,
2 A. balwinensis, 3 P. darwini; discarded all + left
traps out. By bicycle to Juliaca + the lagoon at Sem
pate. Shot 8 Centropelma + other geese. 15 small
dobers taken to this lagoon thir morning on mules +
horses. Thern paddled kayak-fashion lay men on
their lenses using a pole for paddle. They made
a line & drew go costs into shallows at edge
lake & caught many with wooden bolas or
costs flew thru line of boats. Men wading assist
ed. About 70 costs taken, perhaps 1/3 being
half to 3/4 gram young of this year. Many
still on nest islands of water plants. This in
Fulvia gigantis. Less than 1/2 costs on lake then
perhaps only 1/5. This "chaco" said to be held
yearly. Costs called "joyas", Centropelma
called "poco." Returns to Chellunguisi.
August 18, 1952. The 20 traps held 2 A. balwinensis,
2 P. darwini. Put up 1 darwini; discarded others.
Last 2 nights warmer than previous 2 + less frosty but
thin ice formed. Aug. 16-17 night warm; but clear.
To Juliaca & back. Picked up traps.
