Bella Pampa, 16 mi. N. 2 mi. E. Limbari;
July 7, 1952
is growing. Monkeys come down when corn ripening (march, April).
July 8, 1952 Collected Carollia (3) & 3 emballonuridae (?)
in power plant tunnel in day. Another tunnel, where water
ran thru inner end, had several Desmodon (2 collected).
In one tunnel, a black + rufous swallow (1557) and
blue + white bird roosted at night. Nests of former in
same tunnel. A mystic shot light at house in
shooting electric
evening. 10 traps set last night, 3 mice taken from
morning before (april 9, nothing in there (1 specimen, 1559).
July 9, 1952 Shot 3 red lizards (plush capped finder?)
for specimens. Caiman in trees & bushes near house.
When power off for repairs, I entered transmission line
tunnel & found 100+ Carollia in a hot branch of
same (generator puts out much hot air, excellent
for drying specimens). At Tinquis, across Oroya
west of Pocopacumi (across Rio Quitor), coy's sausage
seen in yuca patch (Flora plowed).
July 10, 1952. Visited yuca patch at 6 a.m. & shot
down paca. Hid an hour down trail from
house toward Huancauri (1 day distant, more time). Upon
return, we found the paco, which we had hung in the
house of "friends" for safekeeping, was already in the
pot for cooking. I salvaged the skull. Shot a
dunting & shackle for specimens, & 2 Caprimulgidae at
night near river Irumbari.
July 11, 1952 Hunted in vain for coyote at same yuca
patch. In afternoon hiked upstream from Oroya.
