June 3, 1952 Juliaca
Heda Umayo, 15 mi. S. Umayo, Dpto. Puno
to Mayordomo, Pineda. Reed & water weed shallow lake on
Caseros side of hills, the biggest deep lake to W. of a low
ridge. Selvantani, a flat - mesa with several fine chulpas,
between the shallow & deep lake. A mesa 300' high on an
island in big lake. Santellana arrived & hunted with
him. I shot 2 [illegible], Cinclodes, blackbird, 2 lewis gular.
Glossy fly, gulls, caracaras, Zenotrichia, coots, rother
birds seen. Guinea pigs common along road at base
of rock walls. Santellana shot a Notura nearly. I
set 25 traps near rocks & brush near camp (1/2 mile
from road from Caseros).
June 4, 1952. Traps held: A. jelokii, 4 P. darwinii, 1
men. 6 traps taken by Indians. I shot 4 Cavia along
road. Picked up traps missing: A. jelokii + A. boliviensis then.
Put up: Cavia, 2 A. jelokii, 1 P. d., A. boliviensis, + 2 grebes
+ blackbird shot yesterday.
June 5, 1952. Clear, warm in forenoon, calm. Shot a rail,
yellowlegs, + snipes, + 2 finches. Set 33 traps near foot
cliff near brush + grass. Saw or A. jelokii in brush 3 p. m. Cin-
cloides & spine tails common. Leosiris on shore lake walk-
ing on surface algae in water. Plegadis, Nycticorax, Etilornis,
in lake; Peru teal & A. magirostra too.
June 6, 1952. Traps held: 11 Phylotris darwinii, 1 A. jelokii
2 A. boliviensis. By 11 a. m. 3 new A. j. + 2 A. b. May +
I put up some of each, + I put up 1 cliff swallow.
Looked for bats near Caseros in evening but found
none flying.
