May 17, 1952 To nr. Chala, Dpto. Arequipa
from sea. Saw 4 cardos at one hour over beach & pecked
up Albatross skeletons. Gray gulls & large white bellied black
looted gull common, especially former (1000+). We drove on
to near Chala & camped on beach. Strong wind from S. in after-
noon & breeze from land (E) in night.
May 18, 1952 Nr. Chala
Two latters in traps set near bushes. Watched corvinas
most of day & saw up to 4. Also saw: black shearwat-
ers (5000+), loobies (200+), black bodied gulls (50+)-[juv.
with black heads; od yellow bill with red tip, greenish legs],-
500+ black skimmers, 200+ pelicans, 50+ Barnegulls for
morante (commonest washed ashore carcass), turkey vulture
(30+), black vultures (3), commonats with red legs & white
mark on side throat (10+), gray gulls (2000+). Saw
cardos & turkey vultures feeding on dead birds on beach.
In late afternoon drove several miles toward Atico & camped.
May 19, 1952 Nr. Atico, Dpto. Arequipa
Drove to 3 mi. W (4 1/2 by road) of Atico & camped.
A few loobies, & 2 cardos & 2 at turkey vulture
seen. Clear small sandy beach. Parking ended dawn.
6:18, drove rather curdumaged dirt road. Atico 89km.
from Chala. Bare boulders & rocky hills a few hundred
yards back from ocean. I set 45 traps near
beach & up to 1/4 mile up loose rocks & sand slopes
toward hills. Cactus, a few shrubs & a gum growing
plant, but general aspect leaner. Much more
sgrinae rocks. Mod. breeze.
