C. Koford 168 Journal May 15, 1952 To nr. Puquio, Dpto. Ayaccho P.O., + 2 P.P. We drew on to Puquio over bad dirt road. Vicunas seen to 13000' (-7). Puquio, a dirty mud town, at 10500': Rocks & brush at this + higher levels - appearing like Lail- oni area - with about 1/2 or 3/4 of ground clear of brush. Road ascended to 11500'. Shot a green humming bke + saw big Turkey, Caneloda, & other birds. Costus, brush to 15' high, many rocks & a green look. Road descended to a ruin, then ascended again. We camped in rather dry area where costus & brush at 11500', about 30 mi. on road from Puquio. I set no traps but others did. To nr. Nazca May 16, 1952. Traps took alison, Phyllotis, Oryzomy? We drove on. Road ascended to over 13000', to rolling grassy grassy area where many vicunas (40+ mi. on road from Puquio). Then vegetation drier as desert commenced. Vicunas to 12400', rather continuously rocky dry barren area. Burned up looking 10' high leafless trees with seed pods 4" long at tips branches (7000'). Organ pipe costus at 5000'. at 4000'; 20' high ocacia - like trees in bottom Iroad river bed, & same near Nazca at 3000' where much cotton growing. We parted from Parsons, giving them our specimens to take to Berkeley. They to Lima. Stopped in Nazca & camped. 5 miles toward Chala on rocky sandy flat where vegetati- like trees & bushes like stipites. Many fox tracks. May 17, 1952. Caught 2 house mice in 10 traps set last night. Warm here at night. Drew on three rocky bare area. Then sand dunes & ridarros. Road to coast (Tavarra?) at km. 600 where broad sandy beach + strong wind
