C. Koford 166 Journal May 9, 1952 To nr. Abancay, Dpto. Apurimac climbed to 12000', down to 6500' & across Apurimac river, then up to 12000' & down to Abancay, thence down more on Puguio road & camped at 6500'. 6500' elev. in sector, than true, dry hot belt fruit bananas & sugar cane at next higher level (as Abancay). May 10, 1952 To nr. Chalhuanca Dpto. Apurimac a few traps set last night caught long tailed pale [illegible] gray Anonymys - like mouse. A few bats seen. Drove up the Pachachaca River thru pepper tree - sector area. Shot a Merganette at 8000' & O.P. one of pair at 11400 (alternate) [letter 30 km. on road beyond Chalhuanca). Shot two Coots/ploes at 7100' & saw grousel, & large dove, sparrow hawk. Camped 150 km. on Puguio road in grass & brush area. May 11, 1952 To Km. 181, Puguio road Person got 4 Abdom [illegible] like mice in traps set last night. We drove on toward Puguio. Attiplomo grass lands, 13700' at km. 160. We drove on to km. 181 the 14700 apparent summit, seeing many elmore & alpaca & a few vicunas. We drove about 5 miles off road to NW on a side road & camped & set more traps. May 12, 1952 10 km. SW Chellhuas' / 4700', Dpto. Apurimac, Peru Frosty clear night, moonrise 9:30. Traps held several Phyllotis pictus. Saw gray Phrygilus, Chlorophas, Co- laptes, Sparius (black & yellow), Cinclocos, one turkey vulture, a other birds. Heard several Tinamotus P. & Person shot one (8 2 1/4 lbs.) Many took A. jelschii & Chinchillula in traps. Hook up my 35 traps & roast on rocky slope. Came wet,
