C. Koford 1952 Journal February 18, 1952 Huaylarcq (5000'), Opts. Arequipa Temps. -2 C., +10 1/2 C. Stars last night. Cirrus overcast but calm & sunny in morning. 8/10 cumulus nimbus by 3 p.m. Watched vicunas 8:30-1 p.m., 3-5 p.m. New newborn juv. and another a week old. First days of Orvicual taking interest in 72. Some rain & hail late afternoon, February 19, 1952. Temps. -1/2 C.; +11 C. No precip. last night. Fog, then overcast this morning. Delayed by water in gasoline. Watched vicunas 10 a.m.-4 p.m.. Occasional light sprinkles. 9/10 cum-nimbus by 2 p.m. Heavy hail 3-3:30. Rain in evening. February 20, 1952. One year since leaving Berkeley. Temps. +1/2 C; +10 1/2 C. Temps. taken in shade under truck about 8' above ground. 7 a.m.; cirrus cir.-str. overcast; 1/10 low cumulus. Watched vicunas 4 in evening. 8-11, 2-5. Rain & snow 1 hr. midday; again 5 p.m. A second juv. now in one group 7 adults. February 21, 1952 Overcast & wet. Watched vicunas 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Temps. 0 C., +10 1/2 C. Overcast all day. Hail & snow for 1/2 hr. mid-afternoon. Parsons & family returned in evening. February 22, 1952 7:30-9:30 a.m., watched & photographed vicunas, & watched 1:30-4 p.m. Overcast all day. Hail in mid-afternoon February 23, 1952 With O.P. & Mary drove to El Solitario for gas & to burn. 100 acre & hunted Rethropastes. Shot 2 of these & returned to camp. Overcast except for about 2 hours at midday. Man (Andres Buttery) at Solitario said fakes down in December & that he had sold it recently. February 24, 1952 Overcast, rain, snow in morning before 8:30. Watched vicunas 1 hr. Parsons departed about noon. Car repairs. Rain after dark. February 25, 1952. Frost & 1/8" ice in morning.
